At the invitation of the Centre for Middle East Studies, the project team joined the VI Annual Southern Security Conference. The theme of the conference was “Long-term resilience and recovery processes”. This conference continued a series of public discussions on security and recovery issues in the South of Ukraine. Together with representatives of the local government and civic society organisations, we searched for recipes for resilience and points where recovery can begin – something we truly believe in. And we believe in Tiahyn and our history.
During the conference we presented the guide to advocating for cultural heritage that is the accumulated experience of advocacy campaigns developed and implemented by IRC “Legal Space” and NGO “Cultural Centre Ukraine-Lithuania” together with partners. The guide is based on two cases: Vytautas Tower and the Tiahyn Fortress.
Vytautas Tower is an example and algorithm of actions in the case when an object is not in the register of monuments. Tiahyn Fortress is advice for actions in case when a monument is listed in the state registers, but it is almost unknown and needs to attract resources for research and promotion. This experience proved to be very interesting to the conference participants as an example of how a cultural monument / object of heritage can unite a community and become a catalyst for its development.
