The Tiahyn fortress is part of the archeological monument of national importance and is a common historical and cultural heritage of three cultures – Ukrainian, Crimean Tatar, and Lithuanian.

The website presents modern visualizations of the fortress and artifacts found by the Southern Medieval Expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The website tells the history of the research of the Great Settlement at different times and the latest history of 2016 – 2021 expeditions, which united scientists and volunteers with a common desire – to reveal to the world the true medieval history of the South of Ukraine and restore its European dimension.

The Tiahyn fortress belongs to a little-known period of the development of Ukrainian civilization – the time when Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania created a fortification line along the Black Sea coast (end of the 14th – beginning of the 15th century).

ABOUT THE EXPEDITION

6 years of expeditions, more than 200 volunteers from all over Ukraine and even Lithuania joined the excavations: the South Medieval Expedition of the Institute of Archeology of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was truly unique. Life in the archaeologists’ camp and communication with scientists was an adventure and an impression that, without exaggeration, changed the worldview.
