Presentation at the conference of the Institute of Archaeology

On 3 October 2024, the virtual museum and 3D model of the Tiahyn Fortress were presented to the Ukrainian and world scientific community for the first time at the international archaeological conference “Medieval castles of Eastern Europe in the context of European history: topical issues of archaeological research and reconstruction”. The organiser is the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Indeed, medieval castles are the most impressive and attractive objects of heritage. What can Kherson region, and Tiahyn in particular, boast of, if the remains of the fortress are actually underground? Perhaps that is why the presentation of the virtual museum and 3D model of the Tiahyn was a real discovery for both Ukrainian and European experts, and this happened thanks to modern tools of reconstruction and promotion.

The head of the Southern Medieval Expedition of the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Historical Sciences Svitlana Bilyaeva, spoke about About the most important discoveries of the Expedition. However, the uniqueness of the Tiahyn Fortress as a monument is not only in its history, but also in the fact that it unites the community. This experience was shared by Natalya Bimbirayte, the head of the NGO “IRC Legal space”, NGO “Culture Centre Ukraine-Lithuania”.

Natalya Bimbirayte said: «From the very beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Lithuanians have been helping the Tiahyn territorial community a lot, and our common cultural heritage and common history motivates Lithuanian partners and people. However, the community also has begun to appreciate its history and heritage: for example, in 2024, the community voted to rename streets, resulting with the Prince Vytautas Street in Tiahynka. And recently, the Tiahyn Fortress shone on the emblem of the Tiahyn community, and it was an honour and a great responsibility for me to be involved in this process as a coordinator. The high quality and professional result we got was the result of the trust of the local authorities and the involvement of the public and experts in the process of developing the symbols. As for the virtual museum and the 3D model of the Tiahyn Fortress, these are European-level products that make the true medieval history of Kherson region visible and accessible not only to specialists but also to a wide audience».
